The Atlas Apothecary

Foraging Trips to the Middle Atlas

On our foraging tours, the principles of traditional medicine are introduced, with hands-on tips for foraging and plant identification, herbal first aid and other key principles of working with nature for healing purposes. We will arrange some of the herbs we find for drying, whilst others we will make into a cold-press oil for each participant to take home. Our tour takes us to the foothills of the Middle Atlas mountain range, half an hour from Fes, where we will explore the hills which offer different plants and herbs for healing throughout the seasons of the year.

Prepare for your trip

For the walk, please ensure you are wearing comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate to the season. Remember that it might rain. Please also bring with you a small towel and flip flops for wading through the streams and waterfalls, and a change of clothing if you wish (although you shouldn't get soaked!). There will be some opportunities for wild swimming so feel free to bring swimming clothes.

Please remember that the weather in Morocco is highly changeable, especially in the hills. In the winter the trip may not be possible where the trail becomes impassable due to rain or snow, and in the summer it is best to make the trip as early as possible during the day to avoid the worst of the heat. Liaise with us directly regarding these details.

The journey to Sefrou from Fes is approximately half an hour, and transport can be arranged on request or by the participants independently.  On arriving in Sefrou we will be joined by our mountain guide, and will ascend into the hills for a trip lasting around four hours. Please keep the whole day free since the time can vary somewhat.
